None of the customers laughing through brunch at The Phoenix Jazz Club on Sunday looked familiar to the staff from the Newhouse domestic violence shelter taking tickets at the door. But then, said Susan Whitmore, vice president of development from the shelter, “When we see them, women are usually at their worst. The women who have come back to visit after they’ve gotten their lives together look night-and-day different from when they stayed with us.”
A recent count of the endangered black-footed ferret found 26 of them at two reintroduction sites in west-central Kansas. A U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service biologist said only seven ferrets were live-trapped, but two dozen volunteers who spent a week in the pastures counted the others.

<strong><span class="subhead">The problem</span></strong> Ben Nicks of Shawnee has wondered for years about a sign alerting motorists to a “deaf child area” near the 5500 block of Inland Drive in Kansas City, Kan. The sign has been there for at least a decade, he says, wondering, “Is the deaf child still in the area or is he a deaf adult by now?”
